One of our days off was visiting the Chelm chalk tunnels situated in the heart of Chelm and accounting for its lines of drunken street lights
Above ground there is a definite drunk appearance, each line of street lights are all set at a jaunty angle and not one at the same as it's adjacent light this is a direct response to the subsidence caused by the chalk mining
Dating back to the original inhabitants of Chelm chalk has been almost continuously mined firstly on a ad hoc basis and as a result of substantial subsidence more controlled. 15 different levels have been identified and in 1985 three of these have been open to the public with a labyrinth of over a mile of tunnels and chambers including one occupied by a resident ghost "BIELUCH" translated to the obvious Whitey we spent a relaxing couple of hours exploring in a comfortable and constant for 9 degrees.
